AN award-winning folk singer-songwriter will be playing in Settle as he tours in support of his latest album.

Sam Carter, who won best newcomer at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, will stop off at Victoria Hall as one of a number of dates across the UK to promote his third solo album 'How The City Sings'.

The album was released in April this year, following a period of touring round the world, including trips to Canada and Pakistan.

Speaking of the album, Sam said: "What’s important to me about the record is that my experiences and what I sing about have become inseparable. I'm writing about my own life but also trying to give voice to the lives of others."

The experiences that are confronted on 'How The City Sings' are those of living in London.

"The stakes are high when you live here," explained Sam. "It requires you to make big decisions about whether you stay or go."

A global influence is also present on the album, drawing on Sam's recent experiences working with revered South Asian classical musicians Sajid Hussain and Haroon Samuel. Sam also made an appearance on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show playing songs cowritten with Zimbabwean musician and former refugee Lucky Moyo.

In 2014 Sam teamed with Jim Moray to form False Lights, a band with the stated aim of updating the template of folk rock and 'making a joyful racket'. Their 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominated album 'Salvor' was released to great critical acclaim.

Sam also made an appearance on 'Later… with Jools Holland', and fulfilled a lifelong dream by performing in a specially assembled band to back legendary guitarist Richard Thompson at Shrewsbury Folk Festival.

'How The City Sings' was recorded live to tape in the studio, the album was produced by Dom Monks, who has worked with Ethan Johns on records by Laura Marling, Paolo Nutini and The Staves.

Further production was also handled by keyboardist Neil Cowley, best know for his contributions to Adele's first two albums. Sam's band also includes Sam Sweeney of Bellowhead, drummer Evan Jenkins and longstanding bassist Matt Ridley.

The gig at Victoria Hall will take place on June 10.
