FLUTES and Co's new musical director Sue Nicholls picks up the popular ensemble's baton for the second time in concert on Saturday, July 16 (7pm) at Kendal's Stricklandgate Methodist Church.

Sue took over the Flutes and Co helm from well known Cumbrian music teacher and flautist extraordinaire Suzanne de Lozey in September 2015. A former player with the Lakeland-based Flutes and Co outfit herself, highly respected Sue has plenty of experience under her musical belt, having led two other flute choirs in the in Hereford and Northumberland.

Sue’s main work is with young children but she also finds time to play flute and piccolo in the Westmorland Orchestra and play and call for Rascal Fayre Ceilidh Band.

Sue, who lives in Kendal, says she's very excited about her new challenge: “They’re a wonderful group of flautists of all ages, from 12 to 60-plus. Eight new members have just joined us so now there are over 25 flute players. It’s a real mixed ability group, with more experienced players supporting the younger ones and giving them a chance to lead. My aim is to offer everyone the opportunity to develop their musicianship and ensemble skills, widen their repertoire and try out new instruments. We’re really lucky to own a full range of piccolos, alto, bass and contra bass flutes, which along with a double bass player and percussionist gives a lovely warm sound to our ensemble.”

Sue's ensemble has just received funding from the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust to buy a new alto flute with a curved head to make it easier for the younger players to play.

Preparing for their exciting July 16 Summer Flutes concert, Sue explains that rehearsals have been "great fun." She adds: "We’re playing a collection of popular classic arrangements such as Ravel’s Bolero, Vivaldi’s Spring and Over the Rainbow with two smaller ensembles as well as the whole group.”

Local flautist Lizzie Briggs will be performing Thiere’s piccolo waltz Silver Birds accompanied by the rest of the players.

Tickets are available at the door or from Sue on 07557-919879 or by email at sueplaysflute@gmail.com.
