THE Brewery Arts Centre is showing a selection of independent music films this January as part of an exciting season dedicated to new movies.

As part of the British Film Institute’s New Releases Strategy, the Brewery kicked-off the year with Sonita (January 3 and 4).

This diverting documentary follows a young female rapper from Afghanistan who channels her frustrations about her repressive culture through her mic. With 18 Awards under its belt including the Audience Award at the renowned Sundance Film Festival in 2016.

Also on show this week was ‘One More Time with Feeling’, the film which charted the creative process of Nick Cave as he made his latest album, ‘Skeleton Tree’, while coping with the tragic death of his son.

Still to come on the agenda are two films which follow the careers of some of the country’s most popular musical icons from the last century.

‘David Bowie Is’ will show on January 10, offering a retrospective of the career of David Bowie.

It was filmed on the closing night of the exhibition at the V&A in London, allowing the film makers rare access to handwritten lyrics, original costumes, photographs, fashion and album artwork.

‘Supersonic’, showing on January 19, also unearths previously unexplored aspects of a much-lauded career, this time that Manchester’s Gallagher brothers.

The film provides an insight into the tumultuous artistic relationship between the brothers who were the driving force behind Oasis, and will enlighten even the most avid fans with an in-depth look into the celebrated and controversial duo’s material.
