BRADLEY Creswick is one of the nation's most popular and respected violinists.

Well known for his beautiful, warm, full bodied sound, his enthusiasm for all things musical, his generous personality and ability to motivate his fellow musicians to achieve their best performance, he's recorded many works for both Naxos and the BBC.

Bradley is an in-demand musician and regularly guest leader for many eminent UK orchestras.

Also a recitalist, he's probably best known for leading the Royal Northern Sinfonia, which performs as Kendal Leisure Centre's Westmorland Hall on Saturday, March 11 (7.30pm) as part of the Lakeland Sinfonia Concert Society series.

He will be the soloist in Mozart’s early masterpiece, the Sinfonia Concertante, often described as a ‘giant’ towering over the other works written at that time. He will be joined by another of the RNS’s outstanding musicians, Michael Gerrard, who will play the solo viola part.

The RNS's concert also celebrates English composers Peter Warlock and Michael Tippett, with the Capriol Suite by Warlock opening proceedings. Based on a set of Renaissance dances in a French style reflecting his earlier interests in folk, Eilzabethan and Celtic cultures, it was dedicated to Paul Ladmirault, one of the founder members of the Breton Composers' Association. The suite is based on six dances, some rather unusual such as the Bransles (pronounced ‘brawl’), the Tordions and the Matachins (a sword dance). The most popular is probably the Pieds en l’air, named after instructions to the dancers to be gentle and as light as air.

The programme also includes Michael Tippett’s Divertimento on Sellinger’s Round, sometimes known as The Beginning of the World, an Irish dance tune popular in Elizabethan times. Tippett also draws on Byrd, Gibbons, John Field and Arthur Sullivan for inspiration.

Finally, the orchestra's programme concludes with Mozart’s 39th Symphony in E flat, where despite being written at a time of financial and personal hardships for Wolfgang Amadeus, he managed to create a wonderfully joyful and positive work.

The Lakeland Sinfonia Concert Society series continues at the Westmorland Hall on Saturday, April 1, with arguably the UK's top clarinettist, Emma Johnson, who shares the stage with the Lakeland Sinfonia conducted by Philip Ellis.

And what better way to wrap up the 2016/2017 season on April 29, than with a performance by the superb BBC Philharmonic conducted by Michael Seal and starring the brilliant violinist Tasmin Little.
