KESWICK Music Society's next concert features two highly talented young musicians.

Following on from its sell-out Royal Northern Sinfonia concert in February, the society brings cellist, Michael Petrov, and pianist, Alexander Ullman, to Theatre by the Lake on Sunday, March 19 (7.30pm).

Michael has been deemed a 'rising star' by the London Barbican.

Born in Bulgaria and educated first at the Yehudi Menuhin School, the meltingly warm, smooth tone and easy virtuosity of his playing has been described as giving the impression of a "dreamer of dreams with the calm assurance of a long established maestro."

Back in 2011, London-born piano player Alexander won first prize at the Franz Liszt Competition in Budapest. Since, his career has included performances with the most distinguished orchestras and musicians and his exciting and intelligent playing has attracted universal praise. They will demonstrate the synergy of their instruments and talents in a fascinating choice of cello music that makes equal demands on both cellist and pianist. Beginning with Prokofiev’s expressive cello sonata (premiered by Rostropovich with pianist Sviatoslav Richter), they will also play music by Schumann and Elliott Carter and conclude with Chopin’s exquisite cello sonata, performed at the composer’s last public concert.

There will be a pre-concert talk at 6.45pm with both Michael and Alexander, who are both Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) supported musicians, a pretty sound guarantee of excellence and achievement.

YCAT is a UK charity founded in 1984 that builds the careers of emerging classical artists. It is unique in providing sustained, intensive guidance, bespoke artist management and prolonged care over a three-five year period.

The organisation selects artists who show international potential and works in partnership with many of the most important venues around the world, building strategic career development that enables young artists to flourish.

Based at Somerset House, West Wing Strand, London, YCAT holds rigorous annual auditions culminating in a showcase public final audition at the capital's Wigmore Hall. In addition to full general management YCAT provides professional media and publicity materials and promotes ‘presentation’ series around the UK. These provide the opportunity for the artists to be heard by leading promoters, orchestras and festival directors.

Next in the Keswick Music Society spotlight will be the Primrose Piano Quartet on Sunday, April 23 (7.30pm).

The quartet, named after the great Scottish viola player, William Primrose, boasts some of the UK's most renowned chamber musicians and has a well-deserved reputation for its wonderful music making.

Tickets are available from the Keswick theatre's box office on 017687-74411.
