ADRIAN Edmondson turned to the dark side at a young age.
“I was quite into folk when I was a kid, but then I got into punk when I was a teenager and turned to the dark side and loved it,” he said.
The comedian turned singer is currently touring with his band The Bad Shepherds and will make a special appearance at the Dent Folk Festival on Sunday.
“I’m certainly looking forward to it,” said Adrian.
“We haven’t done many gigs in Cumbria, but we did one in Workington and they were a pretty mad lot.”
The band cover a number of punk classics with a folk twist including hits by The Clash, The Sex Pistols and The Stranglers along with some New Wave hits from Talking Heads and Kraftwerk.
“We love out German electro synth,” he said.
Adrian - famous for his comedy roles in The Young Ones and Bottom - said there has been a really good response to the music so far.
“It’s all going pretty well to be honest,” he said. “I had a folk revival a few years back and I realised I could play these covers and make them more my own.
“I’ve been playing this sort of material on my acoustic guitar for years but when I acquired this mandolin it sounded very different and much more exciting.
“Punk and folk are the same kind of music and it just works so well, they’re a match made in heaven.”
The Bad Shepherds hope to carry on making music and touring for some time.
“I wouldn’t say no, it’s a really enjoyable thing,” said Adrian. “We’ve done 66 gigs so far and the album is doing pretty well.
"It’s still in the hobby stage at the moment, but me and Rick (Mayal) started out doing comedy as a hobby, we just did it for fun.
"I’m very happy flitting about at the moment, it’s great fun.”
Dent Folk Festival starts today (June 26) and runs until Sunday (June 28).
Most events are free but tickets for some shows are available on: 01539 620 125 or visit: www.dentfolkfestival.co.uk.
