Canyon harness the power of rock

HARNESSING the power of rock to full effect, Kendal band Canyon have already garnered an army of fans following the release of their first demo.

The self-titled EP was recorded at Kendal College studio by Tim Riley and features three original tracks and a cover of the classic Stranglers’ Hanging Around.

Canyon was founded by vocalist Stuart Burton, who teaches at Queen Katherine School and was keen to find a sounding board for the multitude of talented young musicians in Kendal.

Deciding to set up a band that would give locals the chance to record in a studio environment, he quickly recruited Kendal College students Tom Machell – who plays guitar – and Josh Yeung on bass, along with Queen Katherine sixth form student Kayleigh Cheer on drums.

“We were drawn together by a common interest in wanting to play catchy original songs,” said Mr Burton.

“We play country-tinged indie rock with a punky edge.

“I just wanted to give students the chance to be in a band and go into the studio. They’re all so good on their instruments – they really are exceptional actually.

“In the end we would like to play some festivals. Kendal Calling would be brilliant and I think our music would go down really well there.”

With influences spanning from Bruce Springsteen and The Pixies to Hugh Cornwell and The Ramones, Canyon look set to take South Lakeland by storm when they play their loud and powerful rock in local venues this autumn.

“We’ve had a lot of offers for gigs already and everyone who has heard the CD has been very supportive,” said Mr Burton.

Limited edition ‘black vinyl’ versions of the CD are avail-able from staurt.burton@ rocketmail.com
