By Adrian Mullen, Arts correspondent
THE Yorkshire Imperial Urquhart Travel Band return to play Appleby Public Hall courtesy of North Westmorland Arts on Sunday, January 29 (7.30pm).
The band is regarded as one of the best in the brass band business and originally formed in the 1930s as the Yorkshire Copper Works Band at Stourton, near Leeds, where the factory was based. When an industrial merger created Yorkshire Imperial in 1958 the band’s name was changed, becoming affectionately known as the ‘Yorkshire Imps.’ The band regularly performs throughout the UK and Europe playing an extensive repertoire from traditional brass music through arrangements of popular and classical favourites to modern originals, including many new works commissioned by the band itself.
