May's Band of the Month: Blunt Truth
WITH an inventive sound and catchy tunes, the future looks bright for four-piece Blunt Truth, The Westmorland Gazette’s Band of the Month for May - and you can watch them perfom live on this exclusive video!
This experimental-pop quartet features singer Beccy Sykes, 18, of Kendal, who plays synths and guitar, bassist Gareth Tyson, of Dalton, who shares backing vocals with lead guitarist Taighlor Wilson, of Flookburgh, and Max Gore, of Kendal, who keeps the beat on drums.
Their influences include the likes of chart-toppers Ellie Goulding and Bloc Party, and the band’s acoustic-based pop songs feature a clear dance influence.
Since forming in September 2010 their distinct songwriting style has developed organically thanks to their willingness to test the boundaries of music.
Beccy said: “We are just experimenting really. We like playing with silly time signatures to make the songs a bit more quirky and less mainstream, but it’s still very poppy sounding.
"Sometimes our guitarist will come up with a riff and keep playing it until I come up with some lyrics.
"We just like to try things out and see where it goes.”
They have been gigging with pals The Feud, March’s Band of the Month, and just last night played a headline gig at Bootleggers, Kendal.
All four are ambitious and keen to work hard to make it to the big time.
Beccy added: “We are all really eager. It is what we want to do. We all have a passion for music and want it to be more than just a hobby.”
And with an attitude like that, the sky’s the limit for Blunt Truth.
