THIS weekend adventurous choral group Allegri give two very varied concerts ranging over five centuries of church music. The main item on the programme is Zoltan Kodaly’s Missa Brevis, written while the composer was in hiding during the occupation of Budapest in 1942. The concert begins with motets by Palestrina, Victoria and other composers from 16th Century Europe. Allegri then compare one of Purcell’s more gloriously complex anthems, Hear My Prayer, with two later ones by Maurice Greene. For this concert, Allegri’s 24 singers are joined by Roger Bush, playing the challenging organ part in the Kodaly.

Allegri perform at St Thomas’ Church, Milnthorpe, on Saturday (March 7, 7.30pm) and St George’s Church, Kendal, on Sunday (March 8, 4pm).
