THE Westmorland Youth Orchestra always contains its fair share of accomplished soloists, and for its next concert at Kendal Parish Church on Saturday, July 2 (7.30pm), three of its talented players are in the WYO spotlight for the final time.

Conducted by the highly respected musician and teacher, Roland Fudge, the Soloistic programme sees WYO leader Abby Counsell make her violin sing and dance in the lyrically beautiful Concerto in A Minor by the Belgian composer, J B Accolay, followed by Oliver Heath in the wildly passionate Armenian Trumpet Concerto by A Arutiunian (reminiscent of Khatchaturian’s Sabre Dance performed at the last WYO concert).

Next on, Frances Lovell leads the way in reflective but also playful mood, with the pastoral Vaughan Williams' English Oboe Concerto.

With all the soloists back in their seats the WYO's musical tour of Europe switches north for one of the most popular and attractive of all orchestral suites, Peer Gynt, by Norwegian composer, E Grieg. From the ravishing beauty of Morning, through the intensity of Death of Ase and Solveig’s Song, the exotic charm of Anitra’s Dance and Arabian Dance, to the visceral excitement of In the Hall of the Mountain King, the piece truly is a rich feast.

Finally, the WYO programme heads south to Italy and Rossini’s brilliantly appealing overture to his opera, The Thieving Magpie.

Roland Fudge and the WYO team encourage younger players to 'get orchestral' and welcome them along to listen to the 5pm rehearsal at the parish church or to the Welcoming Music prior to the concert at 7pm, performed by the WYOTS Strings directed by Rachel Moore.

Tickets are available at the door or on 015395-60054.
