COME Sunday, and the revered ranks of the Westmorland Orchestra will venture to pastures anew.

Conductor Richard Howarth and the 'wonderful' Westmorland will tread the tuneful territory of Ulverston's Coronation Hall, the first time the ensemble has performed outside of Kendal in 40 glorious years of music making.

In football parlance, the away fixture on October 2 (7.30pm) is a collaboration with three Rotary clubs in the Furness area in a fundraiser for Rotary’s chosen charities.

The programme is laced with light and melodic music, opening with Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel overture and finishing in fine style with a selection of cheerful Viennese numbers.

Orchestra leader Pam Redman - who lives in Ulverston - features as a soloist in two gorgeous pieces for violin - Svendsen's Romance for violin and orchestra and Massenet's exquisite Méditation from Thais.

Also featured will be Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake Ballet Suite and the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia by Khachaturian.

The orchestra returns to its usual Kendal Leisure Centre home for its December 3 concert, which features Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Symphony No 4 by Tchaikovsky and Dvorak's sublime Violin Concerto in A minor, performed by non other than one of the nation's finest, and most dazzling, young violinists, Jennifer Pike, these days in great demand as a soloist across the world.
