THE volume is set to be turned up in Kendal's library, as an innovative creative project brings live music to the normally-tranquil building.

As part of 'Get it Loud in Libraries' (GILIL), a project that organises gigs which take place in local libraries, Meilyr Jones will play in Kendal.

The welsh artist, who used to front critically acclaimed indie band Race Horses until their split in 2013.

The band were based in Cardiff and formed in 2005 and were widely successful, singing in both Welsh and English.

Jones' debut solo album, '2013' came out at the end of March this year and featured the widely praised track 'How to Recognise a Work of Art'.

Stewart Parsons has been running GILIL years, bringing bands to new spaces all over the country.

Coming from a background as a music librarian, it seemed only natural to him to bring together his two passions for the project. It originally started in the North West and now reaches nationwide.

"I worked as music librarian looking to develop teenage audiences and offer creative opportunities," he said.

"Putting live gigs on allowed us to meet both outcomes and do it in style. We have an increased geographic scope now and it is rewarding to take the original model beyond the North West.

"We select our artists carefully. We are looking for quality, fan base and integrity in an artist. Hand on heart nearly all our artists have enjoyed the experience.

"We had Spring King at Coventry Library on Saturday night and they were great champions of both libraries and making creative use of space."

GILIL is a project that is moving from strength to strength, with more and more bands being added to the already-impressive list of associated acts that Stewart and his team have built up.

"We will tour the programme for the next 2 years with gigs in both Barrow and Kendal. We are always chatting to agents about new artists and have just confirmed Cate Le Bon for Kendal Library - we are developing a Welsh theme there!

"We specialize in new and emerging acts but also look for special opportunities with established acts. The main thing is to create a wow factor in libraries. Meilyr Jones is a big part of that."

Meilyr Jones will play in Kendal library on October 22.
