SUPERB young cellist Leonard Elschenbroich is in the soloist spotlight for the final Lakeland Sinfonia Concert Society performance of the 2017/2018 season, on Saturday, April 28 (7.30pm).

Leonard shares the Kendal Leisure Centre's Westmorland Hall stage with the eminent players of the BBC Philharmonic, one of the nation's finest orchestras, performing Elgar's popular masterpiece: Cello Concerto in E minor. Conducted by Duncan Ward, the BBC's 'big works' programme also features Debussy's Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Concerto for Orchestra by Bartok.

Described by the New York Times as "a musician of great technical prowess, intellectual curiosity and expressive depth," Leonard has established himself as one of the most charismatic cellists of his generation.

His many awards include the 2009 Leonard Bernstein Award, Förderpreis Deutschlandfunk, Eugene Istomin Prize, and a Borletti Buitoni Trust Award.

In 2012, he was accepted onto the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme. During his two-year tenure Leonard performed and recorded 13 cello concertos with all five BBC orchestras, made six recordings at the Maida Vale Studios with various collaborators, gave three consecutive appearances at the BBC Proms, and gave recitals at the Wigrmore Hall, Sage Gateshead, and Cheltenham Festival. As part of a continuing relationship with the BBC Philharmonic, he will be releasing two CDs of British 20th century cello concertos, including a new concerto written for him in 2017 by Mark Simpson.
