Calling takes to the road

THE organisers of the forthcoming Kendal Calling festival are about to warm up their crowd by taking this summer's line-up on tour.

Local bands including Kendal favourites Seven Seals (above), Deathretro (the Eden band formerly known as Amber292) and Witch and the Robot are among those travelling the country this month, starting tomorrow (Saturday) at Ye Olde Fleece Inn, in Kendal.

From there they will play Leeds, Manchester and London in a move which the festival team hope will showcase the cream of the Cumbrian musical crop to the rest of England.

"The Kendal Calling Tour is designed to showcase the wealth of talent supported and nurtured by the festival, highlighting the genuine sparks of originality and creativity that make Kendal Calling such a unique event," explains Julie Cotton, a former Kendal girl who helps promote the annual event.

"Kendal Calling is testament to pure do it yourself. From a sparsely-populated county, rural in the most isolated sense of the word, has grown a festival worthy of national recognition and the organisers have decided to call out a little louder with these dates this year."

Following tomorrow's free Fleece gig (which kicks off at 7pm and will also feature Mr & Mr and The Dead Letters) the tour will head to Trash, Leeds, on May 14, then Manchester before concluding in London on May 22.

Kendal Calling itself takes place at Grate Farm, on the outskirts of the town, from August 1-3 and so far the line-up includes Super Furry Animals, Dizzee Rascal and Kendal-born but Brighton-based British Sea Power.

Festival goers will also get to see the Bookhouse Boys, Mystery Jets, Team Waterpolo, Scratch Perverts, Radio 1's Annie Nightingale and Howard Marks among many, many more - all for £55 for the weekend, plus camping. For more information visit www.myspace. com/kendalcalling
