The Rosamunde Trio

Kendal Town Hall

Kendal Midday Concert Club celebrated its 70th birthday by holding a Gala Concert. Sir John Manduell, the club’s president, describes the club as being “a jewel in Cumbria’s crown” and the concert as being truly worthy of its record over the 70 years. What could be better than one of today’s premier ensembles – The Rosamunde Trio – performing two of Beethoven’s immortal masterpieces – the Ghost and Archduke Piano Trios? The festive spirit was heightened by a combination of subdued pink background lighting and brighter illumination for the artists - all of which enhanced Sue Furnival’s attractive, award-winning new backcloth to the stage.

Throughout the louder sections of both works - and inevitably, opinions will differ on this – I felt that Martino Tirimo’s pianistic contribution, magnificent as it was in every other sphere, was too intrusive (why the full stick?), Ben Sayevich’s beautiful violin input failed to adequately carry whilst Daniel Veis’s ravishingly sensitive cello lines, on the other hand, generally blended well.

Nevertheless - what marvellous musicianship was on display! Utter command of the stylistic elements, phrasing that was ever subtle and gracious, delightful technical dexterity of the highest order, admirable ensemble work – the attributes are boundless.

Here was a experience to savour; may there be many more during the next 70 years!
