Blazin' Fiddles, The Old Laundry Theatre, Bowness

BLAZIN' Fiddles are the kind of group you want to see again and again.

Its members - four fiddle-players, a guitarist and a keyboardist - are clearly all incredibly talented musicians, but together they bring an electricity to the room which, gig after gig, holds their audience in the palm of their hands.

Friday's sold-out performance in Bowness took the audience on a musical tour of Scotland (venturing at one point into Norway), with each member bringing something to the set from their own birthplace.

They raced through complicated and impressively-fast marches, jigs and strathspeys, had the audience in stitches in between songs, before slowing things down with some truly haunting and melancholic tunes, including the Fetlar Lullaby from Shetland.

The fiddle players also took turns with solo material, with sympathetic accompaniment on guitar and keys.

The cheer that went up from the audience, when it was asked who had seen the band before, spoke volumes.

A rousing end to the set left everybody calling for more. In reality, I think most people would have sat through the whole thing again, if they could.

If you like your folk music fiery and full of character then this is not a band you should miss.
