Game of Mirrors by Andrea Camilleri (Penguin).

The latest in the series by master Italian crime writer Andrea Camilleri has a fairly convoluted plot which you have to work hard at to follow.

His beautiful neighbour Liliani Lombardo seems to be the target of someone with a grudge while the whereabouts of her husband seems a mystery.

Meanwhile a series of bombings is proving hard to fathom for Inspector Montalbano.

But, as usual, it's not really the plot that is the main attraction of these books.

The real draw is Montalbano himself, put upon, sometimes world weary, vulnerable to lovely women and, above all, a dogged and master detective.

Assisted by his usual colleagues Montalbano is initially confused by a series of events that reminds him of a game of mirrors, when nothing as quite as it seems.

But he eventually gets to the bottom of all the issues, with numerous visits to restaruants and long walks along the shore to his favourite rock by the lighthouse to help him digest the meaning of everything that is going on.

If you have not yet read a Camilleri novel, this is a good one to whet your appetite.
