The Station Inn at Oxenholme has got to be one of the cosiest places to eat in South Lakeland.
A friendly feel greeted my family as we rolled up on a nippy Saturday.
The atmosphere is so inviting and the child-friendly establishment made even the youngest member of our group – aged four – feel at home.
For the few having starters, creamy garlic and thyme mushrooms with toasted Artisan ciabatta (£4.95) and chicken liver and smoked bacon pate with chutney and bloomer bread (£5.25) were chosen – delicious.
On to the mains and two of our group selected slow roasted minted Lakeland Lamb Henry, with redcurrant and mint jus (£13.95) – ‘it fell off the bone’ and ‘beautiful’were the verdicts.
You can choose chips, potatoes or mash to go with it – mash seems to work better to soak up all that lovely flavour.
There were two orders for breaded whole tail scampi with hand-cut chunky chips and tartare sauce (£9.95) – both seemed to go down well.
I ordered the 8oz aged Cumbrian Fellbred sirloin steak, served with mushrooms, a tomato, onion rings, parsley butter and hand-cut chunky chips (£18.95).
The steak was cooked exactly how I asked and everything on the plate tasted good.
The last main course dish was Cumbrian chicken and smoked bacon spaghetti in a three cheese sauce served with garlic ciabatta (£9.50), which was ‘lovely’.
As we were full, only one brave soul dared tackle a dessert – and it could only be Christmas pudding served with brandy custard. No-one around the table was left disappointed after a lovely evening.
We did not have to wait long for our food and the only thing left empty was the plates.
The Station Inn always delivers value for money and wholesome, tasty food served with a smile.
