2000 to celebrate Girl Guides centenary in South Lakeland

NEARLY 2000 girls and grown-ups are expected to converge on the Westmorland County Showground on Saturday night for south Cumbria's celebrations to mark the guiding centenary.

'Cumbagig' - which kicks off at 4pm - will feature The Greatest Take That and Abba Vision tribute bands - and the girls and their guiders are being encouraged to dress to match the music.

It was on September 5 that a small group of young women gate-crashed the annual scout rally at Crystal Palace to ask Lord Baden-Powell to 'do something for the girls'.

One hundred years later, with almost half the UK female population having been involved in guiding at some stage of their lives, the movement is still going strong.

“This concert will start a year packed with celebrations and amazing adventures for our members young and old alike," said Barb Littlewood, Girlguiding Cumbria South County Commissioner.

"We invite everyone who has ever been involved in guiding in the south of the county, whether they’re five or 95-years-old, to join us at the launch to catch up with friends and experience what guiding is all about in the 21st Century!”
