7:20pm Thursday 8th September 2011 in Shows & fairs
MORE than 25,000 people streamed through the gates at Crooklands showfield to enjoy the biggest agricultural event in Cumbria today.
And those who attended the 212th Westmorland County Show were met with a tapestry of the best the countryside has to offer.
The new Countryside Arena drew in the crowds where youngsters were joining in with Postman Pat's 30th birthday celebrations.
Pat himself made an appearance in the BBC Radio Cumbria tent, returning to rural South Lakeland where he was created by Kendal's John Cunliffe.
The Sheep Show also created a buzz, with dozens of people watching sheep being sheared and finding out more about the various breeds.
Cumbria Axeman, situated right by the showfield entrance, displayed their skills with a saw.
The new president John Park, of Low Sizergh, near Kendal, spoke of his pride in his role.
He said: "I have been associated with the Westmorland County Agricultural Society for many years and it was a great honour to be asked to be president.
"It is a wonderful day. What makes this show so special and unique is the community that puts it all together.
"It is recognised as one of the best one-day shows in the country and it has remained true to its agricultural roots which is very important in our area.
"There is literally something for everyone here."
Mr Park said he had enjoyed a tour of the livestock classes and was impressed by the standard.
"The quality of the livestock is just unbelievable.
"We are particularly proud to be hosting the national show of the Aberdeen Angus society."
The flag was flying high for Scotland in the cattle section.
Supreme champion beef prize went to a Scottish Belgian Blue while the national summer championship of the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society kept crowds entertained despite the driving rain.
Owner Kevin Watret of Annan, said: "I'm absolutely delighted, this is a tremendous one day show, probably one of the best in the country so it means a lot to win here."
Judge Steve Pattinson, who earlier awarded Mr Watret's Belgian Blue the best in its class, said: "She's one of the finest examples of the breed I've seen in all my professional career.
"It just had good mobility, growth and length."
Supreme dairy champion went to David Booth of Austwick with his four-year-old Holstein Shottle L Melody. This was the first time he had shown that particular cow and judges praised it for the size and quality of its udder.
With their velvety fur and muscular stature, the Aberdeen Angus cattle that featured in the national championship managed to draw the crowds to the showring.
Competitors from as far away as Devon and North Scotland attended the contest, which is held at a different showground each year.
Supreme winner was a two-year-old owned by Tom Beadle from Surrey, who said he was 'chuffed' to take the top prize and £1000 prize money.
Receiving hearty slaps on the back from fellow competitors in the preparation tent, Mr Beadle said he had prepared his bull Rosemead Karona by feeding him up and blow-drying his fur.
Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society chief executive, Ron McHattie, said: "It's a great place to hold the national competition because Westmorland County Showground is so easy to get to.
"It's been great to see all the regional winners come today and compete at the very highest level."
The winner of the biggest class in the sheep section at Westmorland County Show was delighted to win for the third year on the trot.
Keith Stones had travelled from Richmond in North Yorkshire for the day.
And it was well worth the journey as he picked up overall upland champion with his three shear North Country Cheviot.
He said: "This is the third year in a row this ewe has won the title and we have had overall champion six out of the last seven years.
"We always come here - it's the most friendly show that we have ever been to. It's a very, very good agricultural show.
"It is a whole year of work to get to this stage. This ewe had triplet gimmer lambs this year and was still ready for the competition. We're really pleased."
Energetic pigs had crowds in fits of laughter as many escaped from their trainers to sprint round the ring while judges picked the overall winner.
Securing the prestigious title of supreme pig was John Sutcliffe, of Coal Yeats Farm, in Lowick, with his rare breed seven-month-old Saddleback.
Showing the black and white pig around the ring was his eight-year-old granddaughter Imogen Sutcliffe who was ‘really happy’ to win.
“I breed a lot of pedigree pigs,” said Mr Sutcliffe. “Anyone wanting to learn about keeping pigs can come on one of my courses- teaching people about the best ways of showing and keeping pigs.”
He added the last time he won the grand champion title at the Westmorland County Show was a few years ago with this year’s winner’s half sister.
All of Mr Sutcliffe’s meat is sold locally at either Airey’s, Dales or Plumgarth butchers.
Judging the supreme pig, Alan Rose said he looked for animals that ‘were excellent examples of their individual breeds’.
“It’s the whole picture you have to look at as a judge,” said Mr Rose.
“It’s like a really good wood carving- what’s impressive is the whole picture, how clean the cut is, how the whole thing fits together.
“You have to bear in mind these animals are produced for meat at the end of the day.”
With a marquee bursting at the seams with produce and handicrafts, the Women's Institute proved once again that 'jam and Jerusalem' is alive and well in Cumbria.
The Cumberland and Westmorland Women's Institute Federation received 200 more entries for their annual competition at the Westmorland County Show than last year.
Federation chairman Ruth Rigg said their theme of an English country garden had clearly caught members imaginations.
She said: "We had 905 entries altogether compared to 600 last year and we were up on craft and baking and the photography category received a lot of interest this year too."
"Every single stall has been wonderful, full of colour with excellent produce and craft and some visitors have said it's the best display they've seen."
Champion baker Heather Woof of Staveley had been working around the clock to create her winning entries.
But her hard work paid off however when she was awarded the most number of points in the produce category for her jams, chutneys, Victoria sponge cake, teabread and butterfly cakes - all recipes handed down from her mother.
Mrs Woof said: "I'm a committee member too so I've been working to set up the stalls for three days solid so I've been baking when I get in to make sure things were fresh. Most nights I've been baking until 11pm - it's all be worth it though, I'm chuffed."
Culinary treats filled the Westmorland County Show’s food hall - with everything from Cumberland sausages to the second hottest chilli in the world.
A vast quantity of locally produced food has been selling faster than hot cakes in the show’s main food hall.
From Damson gin, Grasmere Ginger bread biscuits to Penrith’s frozen yoghurt- show-goers were spoilt for choice on what to buy next.
Gerald Fowler, of Cark-in-Cartmel’s The Chilli Pepper Company, which sells a selection of sauces, pickles and chutneys, said this was his ‘favourite show’.
“The amount of people who come through the gates is really impressive,” Mr Fowler said. “I’ve been selling my ten-minute burn (a very hot sauce) here which has been banned from four other shows because it’s too hot.”
Supplying crowds with homemade chocolate was Peter Andrews, of Annette’s Lakeland Kitchen, of Shap.
“It’s one of the best shows,” said Mr Fowler. “There are so many people here.”
Shirley Roberts, of Pilling, had baked a variety of pasties and pies.
“I source as much as I can locally because it’s important for local traders to help each other out,” said Mrs Roberts.
Shelia Latus, of Shelia’s Maid Low Fat Frozen Yoghurt, said she loved this show as the food hall had so much selection.
“It’s the best hall in the North West,” said Mrs Latus. “The show is really well organised which always helps.”
