IT MAY have been a day for brollies and wellingtons, but the 129th Cartmel Show beat the weather to provide a fun day out for crowds of people.

You name it, this festival of agriculture has it - from horses, cattle, sheep and poultry to village industries, trade stalls, a food hall and even a falconry display.

In short, everything you would look for in a countryside event is available on the picturesque site at Cartmel Racecourse.

In the horses section, one of the highlights was provided by the charming pair of Ben and Troy, who won first prize in the Farmers’ and Tradesmen’s Turnout Class.

The class has pairs of working horses in traditional ‘turnout’ gear showcasing their strengths.

The duo, 10 and 12 years old respectively, were decked out in a shiny brass and leather harness, which had taken owner Charlotte Sharphouse eight hours to clean.

The pulled a hay-bale stacked carriage behind them.

Beaming Charlotte, of Old Hall Farm, Bouth, near Ulverston, said: “It is a fantastic feeling to win, especially on a soggy day like today. It lifts your spirits.

“When you get home with a red rosette it makes all the hard work worthwhile. It took three hours last night to clean the horses, and there is a lot of preparation involved, so it was really nice to hear the crowds clapping and people appreciating the horses.”

Naomi Boorman, of Holme Farm, in Helsington, near Kendal, was thrilled to have won supreme champion in the cattle section when she showed the farm’s Holstein heifer Pagewire Flo.

The reserve champion rosette was won by Infloence Elope, also from Holme Farm.

“It is amazing to win,” she said. “Pagewire Flo belongs to my boyfriend Dave Wright’s family and this is only the second time I have shown, so I’m a bit of an amateur really. We have tried pretty hard to get the cattle ready. We are pretty proud.”

Meanwhile, over in the sheep section Westmorland Gazette columnist and Selside farmer Jayne Knowles and her husband Brian were pleased as punch when their shearling ewe was named champion Rough Fell sheep – one of four first prizes in the six classes they entered.

“I’m really chuffed,” said Jayne. “Our champion ewe’s mother won champion in this class at the Great Yorkshire Show three weeks ago, and she also won today.”
