FELL sheep were herded down from the hills for the 109th Rydal Sheepdog Trials.

Around 4,000 people sat up on the slopes of Rydal Park, in Ambleside, to watch farmers and their four-legged companions put to the test.

The event drew in a bumper crop of entries this year, from professionals who were keen to show off their hounds and sheepdogs.

Chairman Claire Logan said this year had been the first year for the under 16 handlers category, which had proved a success.

She added: “People love the atmosphere here and the fact it’s so traditional.
“Visitors keep coming back every year to enjoy the beautiful park and after the weather we’ve had this year people were desperate to come out for a show.”

Jim Cropper, 71, of Bacup, took part in the brace herding competition with his dogs Black, 7, and Tess, 4.

In two weeks time he will represent England at international trials in Wales.
“Coming down the first bit was tricky, the sheep wouldn’t come forward.

“The dogs never stop learning and I love it - it’s my life. It’s a great feeling to close the pen behind the sheep when they are all in.”
