A POPULAR South Lakeland agricultural show has celebrated a 150-year milestone in glorious sunshine.

The Selside and Grayrigg Show, held at Little Docker, was hailed a success by organisers after previous years had been disrupted by bad weather and seen the event moved to Kendal Auction Mart in 2009.

Sheep and cattle were the stars of the show, but vintage vehicles also made a welcome return after the class was debuted last year.

Visitors were also keen to view the vast range of produce entered in the horticultural classes, as well as the beautiful creations on offer in the craft fair.

Secretary Janet Procter said: “It has gone very well. The field’s a bit soggy but we have coped.

“It is great we are celebrating 150 years of the show though I haven’t really had time to think about that with everything that has been going on. I have been secretary for 14 years and it doesn’t get any less busy.”

Mrs Procter’s mother Pauline Hodgson, from Witherslack, has also been a regular at the show for many years.

She watched proudly as grandson Craig showed his Belgian Blue Cross at the show.

She said: “It is marvellous that the show has been going for 150 years. We always enjoy coming along and seeing the animals, as well as the produce and now crafts.

“Craig also has some sheep in the show, as well as vegetables, and no doubt he will have some baking in there.”

After heavy rain overnight organisers were delighted when the sun came out on the morning of the show.

Joan Shorrocks had come from Bolton-Le-Sands to sell homemade trinkets, bags and purses in the craft fair, which was organised by her daughter Adele Bowker.

She said: “It is the second year they have included the craft fair and we have enjoyed coming here. It is one of about 10 shows we have been to this summer.”

Victoria Beaty, 18, from Newton in Cartmel, said it had been a disappointing show for her male gimmer lambs compared to last year.

She said: “It’s only my second time coming but my boss has been coming for years. I’ll be back to try again next year.”
