GROWERS in a Yorkshire Dales town were praised for their endeavours over the wettest summer in memory.

The president of Ingleton Horticultural Association, John Tennant thanked all exhibitors at the 50th annual show.

Someone who did not let the weather affect his crops was Dan Unsworth. His haul of awards included the Pickard Challenge Cup for most points in the vegetable section and the Raymond and Betty Redhead tankard for the most points in the local section.

Mr Unsworth also came first in the combined onion and shallot and the combined parsnip and carrot classes.

His pair of dressed onions were judged the best vegetable and awarded the National Vegetable Society Medal and also judged to be the best horticultural exhibit to get the Westmorland and North Lancashire Federation of Horticultural Societies Blue Ribbon. He also received the association’s Challenge Cup, awarded for most points gained.

George Towler’s rose was judged best in both the flower section and local section.

In the chrysanthemum classes, Harry Carr took the National Chrysanthemum Society Silver Medal and the Fuchsia Society Spoon. The Westmorland and North Lancs Federation of Horticulture Show Societies Blue Ribbon went to Dave Woodhouse for his dahlia. Hugh and Linda Redhead took the IHA Challenge Cup for the most points in the flower section.

Connie Tooby was awarded the IHA Challenge Cup for most points in the domestic section with Gill Ormrod taking first prize for her fruit cake.

In Floral Art, trophy winners included Hilary Rigby in the Floral Art Novice Class.

As this was the 50th anniversary of the first show, the president of the association awarded a special cash prize to Mailie Wills for her arrangement in sugar craft.

The Ingleton Primary School Trophy went to Callum Thomas, with Sophie Nemeth taking the collage class. Shauna Danskin won the best floral arrangement and Jonathon Whiteley the under nine year handicraft section.

Ella Hodkinson had the highest points score in the children’s section and was awarded the Eddie Hunt Trophy. Matthew Horn was awarded The Humphries Challenge Cup for the best exhibit in the handicraft class and was also awarded the Barker Challenge Cup.
