WESTMORLAND County Show experienced its second highest attendance on record, with more than 29,000 people flocking to the Crooklands showground to enjoy one of the largest – and oldest – one-day agricultural events in the country.

The 213th show opened its gates to the public at 8am on Thursday and eager visitors were able to enjoy a fine morning as livestock judging got underway.

And although a prolonged shower closed in for much of the afternoon, the stoical show-goers were determined not to let it spoil their enjoyment.

However, for those without waterproofs or umbrellas, there was plenty to see in the many tents and marquees around the showground.

After receiving enthusiastic feedback from competitors, exhibitors and visitors alike, Westmorland County Agricultural Society (WCAS) chief executive Christine Knipe hailed the show as a 'great success’.

“The attendance is our second highest,” said Mrs Knipe. “The only greater number of visitors was in 2010 when 30,800 people came to the show.”

"Given the sum-mer we've had with all the rain, to have such a day with only a shower in the afternoon – I couldn't be be happier.”

Mrs Knipe said livestock entries equalled last year’s record level, with 480 cattle and 851 sheep . There were also more than 800 entries in the light horse sections.

“This year we also hosted the Galloway Cattle Society’s national show – only the second time it’s been held outside Scotland,” she said.

WCAS president Hal Bagot, of Levens Hall, said: “The show is a major showcase for farming in this area and the organisers pulled it off superbly.

“There was a vast amount for people to see and hopefully many more will now appreciate where their food comes from.”

Among the special guests were National Farmers’ Union president Peter Ken-dall and Defra director Sarah Hendry, who has responsibility for uplands.

Top livestock judge Andrew Ewing, of Annan in Dumries and Galloway, declared it the best British show of the year.

He said he had judged cattle at four shows around the country and the standard at Crooklands was ‘the highest I have experienced’.

Cattle, sheep, pigs and equine classes were dominant in the show as usual, but there was also a great deal of interest in poultry, goats, alpacas, eques-trian events, dog show, hounds and terriers.

Other attractions to keep the visitors happy included a food hall stocked with a huge variety of regional produce, a craft hall and the WI marquee with its creative crafts and pro-duce.

This year there was a shared theme of the Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics.
