Fundraisers donned their trainers, tiaras and tutus for an inspirational night-time charity walk in Kendal.

Around 500 walkers and runners from Cumbria and north Lancashire took part in the seventh annual StarWalk – raising £50,000 for local cancer patients.

The event, held on Saturday night, is CancerCare’s biggest annual event.

“It was fantastic and the weather came out nice eventually,” said event organiser Helen Hartin.

“There was a real family atmosphere, with lots of local children supporting friends and family.”

This year saw a new five kilometre route added, alongside the 10k circuit.

“The new route was made to be more accessible to people with cancer or for children to take part,” said Helen, who set up the walk after losing her mum to cancer in 2006.

Angela Rawlinson, 50, of Morecambe, walked the 10km with three friends in memory of her aunt Jennifer who died of breast cancer, also in 2006.

“I’ve done it every year now,” she said.

“It’s such a well-organised and worthwhile event. The atmosphere was brilliant.

“We wore flashing tiaras and had T-shirts with Jennifer printed on in sequins. “It’s really lovely to walk out in the dark, it’s something different.”

Marc Murphy, 47, of Kendal, also completed the 10k trek with his daughters Megan, 17, and Abbie, 12.

“I lost my auntie a few years ago but touch wood there’s no-one involved with cancer at the moment in the family.

“We decided to take part because it’s a local charity raising funds for local people.

“It was a bit daunting being surrounded by lots of women but better than sitting on your backside.”

JK, performing as Robbie Williams, provided entertainment and proved a hit with a selection of Robbie’s greatest hits.

Women from the Clarins counter in Beales, Kendal, were also on hand for free face-art, make-overs and facials.

Helen added: “This event would not have been possible without the fantastic support from local businesses and marshals, most of whom were out there for around three hours.”
