ONE of Britain’s best-loved actors brought a touch of the silverscreen to South Lakeland this week.

Warwick Davis, famed for his roles in blockbusting movies such as Willow, Star Wars and Harry Potter, popped into the Lakeland Country Fair, at Torver.

The Idiot Abroad 3 star was filming for a new ITV television show, where Warwick, his wife and two children, travel around Britain visiting family friendly tourist attractions.

The cast and crew of ‘Homegrown Holidays’ were filming in the Lake District and surprised thousands of visitors at the show with an impromptu visit on Sunday. Warwick got into the spirit of the day and judged the best Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling costume while dressed appropriately for the role.

He then toured the field before chatting with visitors, entering his dog into the show and taking part in the stick-making and ferret racing.

“We had to keep it a secret so there were plenty of shocked faces when he turned up with his family,” said Alison Bolt, show secretary.

“They were all very pleasant and said they had enjoyed the day.”

The series will be aired in May 2014. Earlier in the week, Warwick’s trip to the Keswick Pencil Museum caused a flock of children to chase him for his signature.

“We have had many famous people visit the Pencil Museum but none as famous as Warwick,” said manager Alex Farthing.

Warwick and his children have visited the museum on their own family holidays, three times in the past two years - so Warwick took the crew on a tour and explained his favourite parts.

The fair attracted around 3,000 visitors who sampled a taste of countryside life and soaked up the local customs, practices, crafts and food.

Mrs Bolt said the show was well attended, with good entries, particularly as heavy rain had fallen the night before the show.

The senior fell race was won by Ambleside’s Gary Greenhow (56-28) who led home team mate Gary Thorpe (1-01-14) and Kendal-based Dark Peak athlete Mike Robinson (1-01-24). The first lady was Skipton’s J Butterworth.

Broughton Runners’ Mason Smith led home the field in the under 10 race.
