APPLEBY Show enjoyed a bumper year for horse entries, with around 100 more people competing than last year.

The show’s new Equestrian Secretary Anne Hogg made several changes and introduced new classes to the competition, including the Working Hunter Classes, which proved ‘very popular.’ Show Secretary Kath Martin said the whole event, held at The Barley Field on Appleby Golf Course, went off ‘very well’: “The weather was not kind to us but we all kept smiling,” she said.

Chairman of the show committee Mike Schug praised the standard of entries this year in his speech describing them as being ‘very high.’ Mrs Martin also said organisers were pleased that the trade stands had been popular this year, particularly the agricultural stands.

“We have had a new layout this year making it easier for the horses to get on and off the field, which I think has helped.

“It’s been a learning curve this year and next year we’re going to build on it and make it even bigger and better.”

The overall sheep champion was a mule sheep shown by Ron and Fran Wilson from Carrholme Farm, Armathwaite.

The shearling was bred by Neil Marsden at Millstone Moor, Cockermouth, and was victorious in the Mule Shearling Class.

Mr Wilson said they were ‘delighted’ to have won: “She’s looking really well at the moment, she’s got good colour and she’s come up nicely – she’s one of the best ones that we’ve ever had.”

Overall champion in the cattle classes was a Jersey called Hailstone Excitation Winsome II – the two-year-old milk heifer was brought from Ormside Lodge, Ormside, near Appleby.

Owners Mark and Diane Wilson said they were ‘very pleased to win’ as Appleby is their local show.

On the secret of their Jersey’s success, they said she was ‘a very balanced heifer with a strong top line.’ Prize winners: Cups and Trophies HORSE SECTION The 'Rivington' Silver Challenge Cup, best group of three Fell Ponies: Mr & Mrs D Wilkinson.
