A MIX of show pros, enthusiastic tourists and supporters of agriculture made up a large crowd that attended Tuesday’s Hawkshead Agricultural Show.

The day-long event at Hawkshead Hall Farm, brought cattle, horse and sheep champions together, as well as stalls and games to entertain while the judging went on. David Arnold, who has been Vice President of the show for the past 10 years, was relieved to have such a strong attendance.

“We are pleased with the turn out, especially after the touch and go of whether the show will go ahead the past few years,” said Mr Arnold..

“In the past we have had to cancel due to it being just too wet.

“Last year was a worry, and this year was too, but we are relieved it has gone ahead.”

Througout the day, judges went through the cattle, horse and sheep classes to finally crown their overall champions.

The championship beef trophy went to Dean Saunders, from Marton, near Ulverston, who proudly displayed his seven-month-old calf Holly.

The 19-year-old said: “I am very proud she has won as not that long ago she was quite wild and running you around.

“It’s been a good day, a good day to be off work.”

In the championship sheep competition, George Harryman, from Hawskhead, took home the top prize, with The Cookson Trophy being awarded to his three-year-old Herdwick ram.

“We have been coming to the shows for quite a few years now,” said Mr Harryman. “Next show will be at Ennerdale and then we hope to take home a prize in the Westmorland County Show.”

Newcomer to the show, Jim Capstick, came to support the event and won the top prize in the Swaledale sheep class.

Mr Capstick, from Millom, said: “This is my first time showing here. We have come here today as we want to show our support for local shows.”

Food stalls, a climbing wall and a small fun-fair entertained the crowds as they waited for the main attraction of the day.

Mark Wylie, who had travelled down with his three border collies from Loch Lomond to perform ‘The Drakes of Hazzard’ charmed showgoers with his dogs who rounded up geese and performed various tricks.

The Society Cup for the overall champion horse in the show was won by heavy horse, Wheathead Akelda – shown by Glenis and John Dodd.
