Old Times, Theatre by the Lake, Keswick

The cigarette smoke filled stage is obscured by a fog of words that lead you into a cryptic maze of intrigue. Who is a victim and who holds the real power in the relationships between these three people?

Harold Pinter's words are musical and mesmerising. This production captures the era of the 70s and the set designer's attention to detail, with the Hornsey Pottery coffee set and endless supply for cigarettes is perfect.

Liam Smith as Deeley brings the Alpha male of the decade to life on set, overpowering the ghostlike Kate, played elegantly by Rebecca Todd.

Anna, her old flatmate is the yin to her yang, a character full of retro flamboyance and energy, boldly portrayed by Katie Hayes.

But who holds the balance of power? Who controlled the events of the past decade? Who is alive and who is dead?

Don't expect answers but more questions from this play which captures the imagination with its multiple interpretations.

Old Times runs until November 8.
