An Evening of Ghostly Tales, Lancaster Castle, Lancaster
LANCASTER-BASED demi-paradise’s autumnal offering of readings of ghostly, haunting stories has been staged in Lancaster Castle for six years now, and is a welcome, seasonal entertainment during a period of lengthening shadows and chilly evenings.
This year’s selection of seven short stories featured a timely and haunting trio of pieces marking the anniversary of World War I.
The readings were by writers from Wales, Scotland and Ireland and America, from Victorian times to the 1930s.
They were staged in the crown court, drop room, Hadrian’s Tower and the library, and the subdued lighting in each space heightened the dramatic intensity of the tales.
The four readers - Ian Blower, CP Hallam, Helen Longworth and Sue McCormick - all have strong links to the North West and gave lucid, vivid and strong performances under Stephen Tomlin’s sure and suave direction.
