FANS of Jane Austen can help create their very own comedy play based on her work during a hilarious new show at the Brewery.

Austentatious is a completely improvised show which takes the audiences suggestions and turns them into a unique performance based on the work of the author responsible for classic works such as Pride and Prejudice and Emma.

Past performances have seen the cast create brand new plays based on suggestions, including Man-filled Park (Manfield Park) Tents and Tent Stability (Sense and Sensibility).

Staged at the Kendal arts centre on Saturday, January 31 (8pm), the premise of the show is that Jane Austen didn’t write just six novels but hundreds and the actors' job is to bring to life one of the lost ones.

At the beginning, members of the audience write down their suggestions on a piece of paper and put them in a bucket. The cast them draw them out at random and craft the performance from the chosen titles.

The show debuted at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival and enjoyed sell-out shows and rave reviews and also won the prestigious Chortle Character Improv or Sketch Show Award.

Brewery theatre programmer Mike Jones said Austentatious was a great crossover show. He added: "Literature fans will love the Austen references while theatre fans will enjoy fantastic performances. It is also very, very funny.”
