LOVE is definitely in the air as the Valentine’s vibe adds a touch of romance to a local literary gathering.

Sedbergh aims to enhance its lively cultural image with Book Town Buzz 2010, a weekend of book-related events for all the family.

Driven by Sedbergh-based wordsmith John Rice, the programme opens tomorrow evening (Friday) with Shouting at the Ocean at the People’s Hall.

It features songs, poems and comedy by poet and writer Roger Stevens, readings by children’s writer Michaela Morgan, as well as performance poetry by John, who is also Glasgow’s poet-in-residence.

Among Saturday’s (February 13) events will be a Drawing Cartoons and Making Comic’s workshop for youngsters aged from 11 upwards, held at the Methodist church hall, between 10.30am-12.30pm and 2pm-4pm.

And who better to spin a few yarns than newly-appointed Storyteller Laureate Taffy Thomas, who will wax lyrical from his tale-telling throne at the People’s Hall on Saturday, from 7pm.

Meanwhile, on Sunday (February 14) the sounds of experimental instruments constructed from household and other junk will ring around the PH when Nick Penny brings his best-selling book Making Musical Instruments from Junk! to life.

As an added ingredient to the Buzz weekend, on Sunday, three of the Book Town’s cafes host poets and actors who will dish up love poems while diners slurp their soup, bite into their burgers or chew on their chips as Sedbergh celebrates St Valentine’s Day with a delicious helping of romantic poetry combined with a hearty lunch.

John and Clare Rice will be at the Post Office café at noon, Evelyn and Mark Westwood will be at Sedbergh Café at 12.30pm and Duo Café and Bistro will be hosting local drama teacher Gillian Rea together with Keith Wood at 1pm.

“For young people and children the words ‘creativity and innovation’ simply imply a sense of fun,” enthused John. “And that’s exactly what Book Buzz is all about, a sense of fun for all the family.”

Programmes and tickets are available from the TIC online at www.sedberghbooktown.co.uk/webshop or on 015396-20125.
