Review: 2Faced Dance: In the Dust @ Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal

THE return of 2FacedDance to Kendal was eagerly anticipated by anyone who saw their explosive performance at the Brewery last year.

The all male troupe gave a remarkable performance in 2010, showcasing an athletic form of dancing that visibly touched the audience– but this tour opened with a darker soundtrack which explored a chaotic world with ugly body shapes that pictured a world in danger of imminent doom.

The second dance called Politicking Oath was based on the power struggle behind the Olympic Games, with a Soviet feel of strict rules and treadmill monotony broken by snippets of crowd cheers and a ticking clock.

The third and final dance brought back the feelings of wonder. Based on the state of emergency after the Haitian earthquake, it was fraught, fervent and emotional with dancers launching themselves into the air before tumbling dramatically to the floor.

It didn’t make the hairs on my neck stand up like last year’s show, but certainly showed why 2FacedDance remain one of the most exciting dance companies in the UK.
