With all the divisive media about tragedies, world finances and global political situations I thought we'd look at websites that are trying to unite us, not divide us. Here are simply brilliant examples of how people are using new media to help us connect, communicate and comprehend each other's lives.
Celebrating on the Net - Videos Unite Cultures...Pangea Day, May 10...
The special event is dubbed Pangea Day, stemming from a Greek word that refers to the land mass that existed on Earth before it divided into separate continents - www.pangeaday.org It is: "A filmmaker's wish to unite people worldwide by letting them see life through each others' eyes is coming true."
It is the result of a wish that Jehane Noujaim, Egyptian American documentary film director best-known for her films Control Room, Startup.com, was granted as part of a Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) conference prize in 2006, and counts movie stars Meg Ryan and Cameron Diaz among its supporters.
Source: www.canada.com Here's what others are saying. Pangea Day plans to use the power of film to bring the world a little closer together. We're divided by borders, race, religion, conflict... but most of all by misunderstanding and mistrust. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that - to help people see themselves in others - through the power of film.
http://mx.youtube.com/watch?v=-r1AQXifpRM On May 10, Pangea Day sites in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked to produce this four-hour program of films, speakers, and music. The program will be broadcast live to the world through the Internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.
Creating a global green, online community Care2.com is the brainchild of Randy Paynter, who wanted to create an online community to right the world's wrongs since he was young. The Internet provided just the tool he needed.
"Care2 provides powerful tools to make a difference in your life, community, country and world. It's driven by passionate people (just like you) who want to restore the world's balance.
"Care2 grew out of my apartment a long time ago. Today, over 50 employees, eight million members, 250 non-profit organisations and hundreds of responsible advertisers contribute to making powerful, positive changes in our world." Randy Paynter.
Windermere celebrates its tenth anniversary with its twin town Diessen at Lake Ammersee, Bavaria, Germany. Activities begin next week, but you can keep up on what's happening on Hans-Peter Sander's weblog www.moosblogger.de where there is a permanent branche "A look to Windermere". Now that's making inter-community links work on the Web.
They all show a great commitment to global topic involvement and are all joined together by the technical thread that is the Internet.
