ARNSIDE Choral Society is in action on two occasions next weekend performing Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem as well as showcasing Requiem for an Angel by modern composer, Paul Carr.
The choir performs both pieces at Arnside Methodist Church on Friday, May 31 (7.30pm) with organ accompaniment by David Chapman. Meanwhile, on Saturday, June 1 (7.30pm), the popular choristers repeat their programme at St Thomas’s Church in Kendal with organ and a chamber orchestra, led by Roland Fudge. The choir’s conductor is Ian Allan with soloists, soprano, Tracie Penwarden and baritone, Dominic Rose.
First performed in 2006, Carr’s requiem is like Fauré’s in that it avoids any reference to the terrors of the Last Judgement, reflecting rather on the feelings of peace, love and compassion he felt following the death of his mother, to whom it is dedicated. It is a fascinating mixture of musical styles and tempi and the words are an eclectic mix of the poetry of Emily DIckinson, St Teresa of Avila and Jack Larson as well as a Hebrew psalm and English translations of the Mass.
Tickets are £10 and available from choir members, the Posh Sardine at Arnside, from St Thomas’ Church and the Made in Cumbria shop in Stramongate. Tickets also available at the door for the St Thomas’ concert.
