IT’S a three-for-one special on Cumbrian musical talent at Bootleggers tonight, headlined by North Cumbrian punk trio Colt 45.

The band were recently announced as one of the acts performing at Kendal Calling, and will be hoping to continue the ‘surreal’ success of last year’s festival season.

During their set on one of the smaller stages at CockRock Festival in Cockermouth, a member of festival staff asked lead singer Neil if the band would like to play on the main stage.

“We said ‘of course’ and carried on with the set,” said bassist Gareth, “but we had no idea what was going on.”

It transpired that after rapper Wylie had launched into a foul-mouthed Twitter tirade about Cumbria before his appearance and the festival wanted a back-up.

Sure enough, the grime artist left the stage after two songs following an overwhelmingly negative crowd reaction, and Colt 45 took to the stage for their biggest performance to date.

“It was absolutely amazing,” said Gareth, “and one of those things that will never happen again.

“Everyone was really hyped about Wylie so the fact that we were from Cumbria made it even better.

“It was great to have Wylie’s dressing room afterwards as well.”

The warm crowd reaction and media interest that followed led the band to announce the next day that they had signed to Visible Noise records.

“We’d actually signed the day before the festival so the timing was absolutely ideal,” said Gareth.

“We’ve been doing this for so long and having this label interested in us makes it feel like it’s paying off.”

Appropriately enough, the title of their upcoming album will be ‘The Tide is Turning’, scheduled for release in the summer.

“I think there’s a more mature sound to it because we are all a little older,” said Gareth, “we’re still angry but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

The band have also announced they will be performing at Download Festival, Donington Park in June.

Also performing at Bootleggers tonight are alt rock Lake District band All Becomes Clear and Workington three-piece Youth Salute.
