FILM fans can feast on an evening of short movies by some of the region’s talented filmmakers at a special event at Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre.

On Friday, July 18 (8pm), the Brewery hosts the Northern Exposure Short Film Competition awards, featuring 10 specially selected short films between three and 10 minutes in length, two of which will be chosen as winners on the night and be screened at the Kendal arts centre throughout the summer.

Chosen from more than 40 entries, the shortlist comprises: Pony - Dreamtime Film (music video); Driven - Signal Film and Media; The Wizard in the Wood - Richard Berry (about wood sculptor Andy Levy); Capetown - Ben Barden (hound trailing); Furious Cycling - James Robinson; Peace - Stuart Appley (Second Wolrd War battle scene); Circa - Jon Randall; The Unusual Characters - Ben Wright; Twins - Bekah Funning; and One Last Walk - Emma Rydal.

The overall winner will be chosen by the audience on the night while a special judge’s award will be picked by a panel, including local filmmakers Dom Bush and Simon Sylvester, Brewery cinema programmer Chris Ashton and multimedia lecturer Kim Lawther.

The audience award winner will receive a piece of artwork created by top Cumbrian sculptor Danny Clahane and both films will be screened before mainstream movies throughout the summer.

Chris Ashton said: “The NESFC is now in its second year and is going from strength to strength. Our region area has world-class locations and an incredibly deep pool of talent and we want to celebrate all that amateur filmmakers from the north west have to offer.”

Meanwhile, the Brewery is using its 40 years of ticket selling experience to launch a brand new ticket agency designed to enable events providers in South Lakeland and beyond to use the Kendal arts centre’s box office staff and computer system, website, digital marketing and social media networks.

Entitled Lakes Tickets, the new venture will allow independent events organisers to tap into the Brewery’s arts marketing and box office expertise to open up their events to a potential audience numbering in the tens of thousands; the Brewery receives a 10 per cent commission on sales.

Apparently, festivals and events which have used the Brewery to sell tickets have seen their sales increase due to two main factors.
