MADE up of three of the leading lights of their generation, Faustus are on a mission to ‘banish all that is anodyne and fey in the delivery of folk music’.

The triumvirate are Saul Rose (Waterson:Carthy, Whapweazel), Benji Kirkpatrick (Seth Lakeman Band, Bellowhead) and Paul Sartin (Bellowhead, Belshazzar’s Feast).

“The intention of the band is to deliver English traditional music with a bit of vim and vigour,” explained guitarist Benji.

Faustus came together in 2006 as an evolution of the award winning band Dr. Faustus.

They made an eponymous debut album in 2008, which saw them nominated as the Best Group in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

After a two year break the band returned with album ‘Broken Down Gentlemen’ in the spring of 2013.

“We decided to choose songs that involved unfortunate men, so there are some fairly stark portrayals of people – whether it’s murder stories or tales of men who waste all their money at the races.

“For me one of the great things about folk is the imagery that comes with it – it can be quite stark and uncompromising at times.”

Faustus play at Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre on October 23.
