KATUŠ Young is not a musician that can be easily labelled.

Indeed the half-Czech folk singer performs in eight different languages including English, Polish and Mandinkan, or West African, while her songs also feature her own 'improvised tongue'.

Tomorrow evening (Friday) she will be launching her new album, The Spring of 2022, at the Upfront Gallery Arts Theatre, near Hutton-in-the-Forest.

The album was begun in Gambia and influences include the sounds of owls in Katuš' garden, an announcement on the metro in Prague and the noise of horses pulling a wagon.

The sounds combine to give listeners a flavour of the musical journey she has taken.

It is the fifth album of her 13 year career, and the second to have been made in Cumbria.

In the last 13 years she has toured the world, including with artists such as Seth Lakeman and The Levellers, and has also played with Donovan and toured with Czech indie stars, Lenka Dusilova and Cechomor.

She recently appeared on channel 4's 'George Clarke's Amazing Spaces'.

In 2010 the Gazette reported that Eden-based Katuš and her Kendal-born husband, Barny Maurice, were offering unique wedding entertainment from gipsy caravans made by Barny himself, which Katuš would use as her stage.

At the launch tomorrow, which will begin at 8pm with a support act, Katuš will perform the new album and play her Chinese gourd clarinet and the guitar.

Her latest offering will be officially released tomorrow under Bill Lloyd's label, Wildwood Records, and will be available to download on iTunes.

Supper will be available at the gallery from 6pm, although a table reservation will be required.
