ULVERSTON Pantomime Society go for gold next week in an colourful and energetic explosion of fun and feathers.

Running from Wednesday, January 21 until Saturday, January, 24, the society stages its annual bash at the Coronation Hall, this year putting on Mother Goose.

A traditional pantomime by Ron Hall and by arrangement with NODA Limited, the story tells of how Mother Goose is about to be thrown off her land because she cannot pay the Squire and his Bailiffs the rent.

Fear not, along comes Priscilla the magic goose to the rescue sent by the wand-waving Fairy Queen.

Priscilla lays golden eggs - and Mother Goose becomes seriously rich.

Alas, Squire Dastardly wants the precious goose for himself and unwittingly allows himself to befriend the Demon King who wants revenge on the Fairy Queen.

Together the dastardly duo conspire to steal priceless Priscilla.

The Demon King tempts Mother Goose with the one thing she doesn't have - youth and beauty. He persuades her to give him Priscilla in exchange for a visit to the Pool of Beauty. She gives him Priscilla, and enters the watery depths, emerging as a beautiful woman.

Too late she realises that beauty is not everything, and that she must get Priscilla back.

Comedy, fairies, baddies, ghosts, monsters and a couple of love stories are all in the family-friendly, entertaining mix.

Oh, and a happy ending too.

Included in the cast is one of the region's best known comedy actors Andrew Barrow, who dons his dame finery as Mother Goose, Idle Jack (her son) is played by Martin Craig, Jill and Colin are played by Helen Day and Nicky Diggle, Carole Leech is the Fairy Queen, and Gail Low takes the part of egg-laying Priscilla.

Ulverston Pantomime Society has been producing an annual traditional pantomime for 67 years, initially with the British Legion but now a small society in its own right.

Elaine Parkinson, a longstanding member who has been involved for more years than she cares to remember, is now the society’s producer along with her husband Jack, the society’s chairman.

Performances start at 7pm with a 2pm matinee on the Saturday.
