ANOTHER leading sax player is heading to Ulverston as part of Jess Gillam's popular series of concerts.

Rob Buckland, professor of saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music, plays the town's Coronation Hall on Friday, March 13 (7.30pm).

Rob is regarded as one of the best saxophonists of his generation, having performed and recorded with major ensembles, including the Halle Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, and Michael Nyman Band, and he was the featured saxophone soloist in Elvis Costello's Orchestral Project.

For the Ulverston show, he will be joined by pianist Peter Lawson, who can be heard regularly on BBC Radio 3. Together, they perform engaging and accessible classical music with jazz influences by composers such as Barbara Thompson, composer of a theme for A Touch of Frost, Jason Rebello, pianist for Sting and Jeff Beck, and Tim Garland.

The concert will also include special guest performances from the exciting 4Js Saxophone Quartet and hugely talented sax player Jess Gillam will perform with 17-year-old percussionist Jess Wood, of Lancaster - both of them were category finalists on BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014. Although, the young Ulverston musician didn't win the BBC competition overall she landed the BBC Walter Todds Bursary for showing exceptional promise. Last October, she made a guest appearance with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra in Carlisle and performed with the Worthing Symphony Orchestra in the same series as Nicola Benedetti, Emma Johnson and Julian Bliss.

Both of the gifted young instrumentalists study at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, with Jess Wood heading to London's Royal College of Music in September to study percussion.

Rob joins the list of saxophone legends such as Snake Davis, Courtney Pine and Tommy Smith, that have graced the Coro stage - courtesy of organiser Jess Gillam - over the past four years.
