THINK of Shakespeare's Falstaff - and Sir Antony Sher immediately springs to mind.

The noble knight of British theatre and eminent RSC actor was highly praised for his performance as the larger-than-life, rollicking personage, in last year's revival of Henry IV Part 1 and 11.

Leighton Hall hosts two Shakespeare outdoor shows this summer one of which is Henry IV on June 25, the other As You Like It in July.

Although Sir Antony isn't in the cast, the double bill of the Bard's finest is brought to the ancestral home of the world-renowned Gillow furniture family at Carnforth by the much acclaimed Festival Players, who are celebrating their 30th year of touring with a staggering 80 date tour of the UK.

Henry IV is an epic historical drama which brings to life the humanity, politics, battles and humour of medieval Britain. It is a spirited adaptation focussing on the loveable rogue Sir John Falstaff - one of Shakespeare most enduring characters - and his adventures with Prince Hal, the future King Henry V.

Performed alfresco in the hall’s stunning gardens, Leighton owner Suzie Reynolds said that The Festival Players performed there every year: "They never disappoint. The plays are always a refreshing take on Shakespeare’s original work.

"We think Leighton provides the perfect backdrop for the cast and together with live, original music written especially for each play, it’s a perfect summers evening of entertainment.”

Whatever the weather, the shows start at 7.30pm; Leighton’s grounds open at 6pm and visitors are welcome to take their own picnics.

Those attending are advised to take their own seating and warm clothes.

Shakespeare lovers will be treated to a free ticket for As You Like It, if they go along to Henry IV.
