AN album born out of 'splendid isolation' is to be showcased at the Brewery Arts Centre this winter.

Newcastle band Lanterns on the Lake are touring their cinematic third record 'Beings', which was released on record label Bella Union to critical acclaim in late 2015.

The album was written and recorded following a period of touring in Europe and America, with the band holing up in their Newcastle rehearsal room, avoiding outside influence.

“The ideas came effortlessly and in abundance,” vocalist Hazel Wilde says of the writing process. “At first we had no expectations, no prescribed ideas of how we wanted the songs to turn out. We were just writing and playing together because that’s what we’d always done.

“We wanted it to be more raw,” Wilde added. “At its darkest points, we wanted it to feel like you’d dived into the deepest part our dreams and were taking a look around. At its lightest we wanted it to feel like you were coming up for air.”

Produced and mixed by guitarist Paul Gregory, it’s also his experience that helped yield these results. The aim was for 'Beings' to move seamlessly from airy, chiming beauty to dense, forbidding soundscapes – sometimes in the same song – while still feeling like the product of a cohesive unit.

Formed in Newcastle in 2007, Lanterns on the Lake released two EPs before signing to Bella Union in 2010 in time to release their debut album 'Gracious Tide, Take Me Home' in 2011.

Recording as a four piece and performing with additional member Angela Chan on violin, cello and viola, the band have a back catalogue of three albums and two EPs to draw from.

Their albums have consistently achieved high critical acclaim, and the band are regulars on t5he festival circuit, with performances at Glastonbury, Bestival and SXSW under their belt, to name a few.

Lanterns on the Lake will play the Brewery on November 30.
