SEDBERGH Art Society was founded in 1972 by Henry Wilson (Harry) Bracken, a well-known and highly respected artist, who exhibited widely as far afield as the Royal Institution of Watercolour painters in London, and at the Paris Salon. His aim in forming the society was to encourage other local artists and to give them the chance to exhibit their work for the enjoyment of local people. The first exhibition took place at the Bull Hotel, but as more members joined the society bigger premises were found at the Masonic Hall.

In those days the main activity of the society was to meet on Tuesday afternoons and sharing cars, drive out to picturesque viewpoints within a 10-mile radius of Sedbergh in order to paint the landscape together. Sometimes, all-day expeditions were arranged further afield in the Lakes and Dales. During the winter a programme of monthly evening meetings was arranged, at which there were talks or demonstrations on various artistic topics.

More than four decades later, the successful society is thriving with its must-see 2017 annual exhibition running from Friday, August 25 until Monday, August 28, at Sedbergh School Library.

As well as the summer show, members stage umpteen activities during the year such as a portrait group, demonstrations by visiting artists and plenty of workshops.

The summer exhibition features a wide range of original work from detailed to abstract works, including watercolour, oil, pastel and lino prints. Greetings cards of artists' work will also be for sale.

More than 120 works will be on show courtesy of 27 talented artists.

Among those exhibiting their creative wares will be Ruth Gamsby, Helen Shields and Ron Gerrard.

Open daily from 10am-5pm.

The society welcomes new members of all ages and ability. For further information visit sedberghartsociety.org.
