CHRISTMAS is mere weeks away and one event that heralds the start of the festive season is Craft Market Kendal.

Held at Kendal's Brewery Arts Centre during the November 24-26 weekend, the prestigious three-day gathering features some high quality names from the art and crafts world.

Organiser and artist Jan Huntley Peace emphasises that the event is much more than an art and craft fair: "Craft Market Kendal is something special,’ explains Jan.

"Exhibitors are all hand-picked for their levels of excellence in their own particular medium or craft. The event provides a fantastic atmosphere of creativity and inspiration supported by live music and seasonal refreshments on Friday evening. Whilst we welcome back regulars such as award-winning ceramicist Rebecca Callis and multi-media artists Penny Hunt and Gwen Bainbridge, we have many exhibitors joining us for the first time such as Morag Macpherson with her printed textile kimonos and bags, the incredible work of Matt Zonca, who bases much of his photographic work on the pinhole camera, and Laura Sowerby's intricate botanical printed cushions and lampshades as seen in Country Living and Interiors magazines."

Jan, who was shortlisted for C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the year 2017, produces delicate porcelain vessels and sculptures inspired by symbolism and bird imagery.

She exhibits her work far and wide, including the Bowes Museum, Huddersfield Art Gallery and Bankside London as part of the New light prize exhibition. Jan previously worked with Zandra Rhodes, David and Elizabeth Emanuel and Norman Hartnell and is no stranger to local art events.

She says she feels really passionate about showcasing the high quality creative talent in the area: "We are all looking for something unique, beautiful and designer-made for gifts especially in the run up to Christmas and we feel that Craft Market Kendal will cater for all tastes and interests. Meeting and talking with the artists themselves is really special."

Also included in this year’s Craft Market Kendal will be designer leather from Tony Morgan, handmade books and furniture by Elizabeth and Keith Shorrock and etched plate jewellery and prints by Kendal artist Jamie Barnes.

Open Friday, November 24, from 5.30pm-8.30pm; Saturday, November 25, 10am-5pm and Sunday, November 26, noon-5pm.
