SEVERAL artists from south of the county have had work chosen for an exhibition commemorating the end of the First World War.

Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life in Carlisle Castle put a call out for local people to creatively express their feelings on the theme of remembrance.

As a result, many professional and amateur artists from across Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway produced unusual and innovative images which will feature in the museum’s first open art exhibition - Remembrance 100, curated by well-known figure from the region's art world, Jamie Barnes.

Among those chosen are works by Kendal-based artists, Zoe Dixon, Tracey Escolme, Mike Glover, Rosie Wates and Helena Sanderson as well as Elisa De Dios, of Kirkby Lonsdale.

The exhibition runs until September 2.

Learning and access officer for the museum, Jules Wooding, said that the variety of artwork was amazing with artists providing exceptional pieces that reflected a personal link to remembrance: "We hope that visitors to the museum enjoy the exhibition as it is important that we take time to consider what remembrance means to us in this final year of commemoration and the contribution of men and women across the years."

Apart from the Remembrance100 Open Art Exhibition, the museum is also organising community and holiday workshops, Tuesday evening talks, a research day offering advice and guidance on how to trace your family history, movie nights and launching a Veterans lunch club. An education and community youth group programme is also in place. The activities are all part of their Lest We Forget programme funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Museum of Military Life is located in the heart of the historic quarter in Carlisle within the walls of magnificent Carlisle Castle. The museum tells the story of the county’s Infantry Regiment and its soldiers past and present.

The Border Regiment was formed in 1881 with the amalgamation of the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment and the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment.
