A KENDAL school has been praised for its approach to teaching literacy.
Staff at Ghyllside Primary School have championed the Letters and Sounds system of phonics to teach their foundation year pupils, earning an accolade from Cumbria County Council's primary national strategy consultant Sue Cove.
She visited the school with Sarah Sinclair, North West regional advisor for literacy, to check out progress and described what she saw as "exemplary."
Y'anne Williamson, who is in charge of the school's foundation stage, said: "We were delighted with the comment from Sue, which is a reflection of the hard work with early years pupils put in by Gill Mason and Sam Metcalfe."
She added: "The early years unit follows a child-centred approach, where children are taught in a rich and stimulating environment by skilled adults who support and encourage each child."
