A POLICE sniffer dog will be patrolling Ulverston nightspots with its handler next week in a bid to root out illegal drug users.
The highly-trained hound is being used in support of officers from the neighbourhood police team, who will clamping down on drug misuse and supply in and around the town's pubs and clubs.
The operation has been organised as part of National Drugs Week, which begins on Monday. Anybody identified by the dog will be asked to leave the area and will find themselves being searched by an officer and could face charges if drugs are subsequently found.
Meanwhile, in Barrow, officers will be out and about using 'drug wipe' kits to detect the presence of a range of illegal drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, crack cocaine, heroine, morphine, amphetamine, ecstasy and crystal meth. They can also detect methadone and benzodiazepines being used illegally.
Drug wipes are simple to use and will indicate the presence of drugs in seconds. They can also test the hands to see if a drug has been handled, and can test the sweat or saliva to see if a drug has been consumed.
National Drugs Week highlights the enforcement and treatment of illegal drug use and supply in the community by police and partner agencies.
